A little over 100 kilometres south east of Melbourne, between Yarragon and Drouin, sits the thriving rural town of Warragul. The term Warragul is named after an Aboriginal expression meaning "wild dog". In 1877, Warragul was established after the erection of the Traralgon railway line, and on 16 March 1877, the Post Office opened. In 1920, after the visit to Australia of the then Prince of Wales, current roads were retitled the Princes Highway. During a service in Warragul on 10 August 1920, this highway was officially opened.
The well-known Peters Ice Cream was produced at a factory in Queen Street and supplied the town for 35 years with all the raw dairy material, being concentrated skim milk and fresh cream. Skim milk powder was also manufactured at the plant under the famous ‘Dutch Jug’ brand, and butter was produced under the ‘Iceberg’ brand. The factory also exported butter oil, butter, and milk powders to the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
The large expanse of Warragul’s commercial hub stretches alongside the chief thoroughfares of Smith and Victoria streets. The original direction of the highway through the town before it was detoured, is Queen Street. This street displays historic buildings with magnificent facades, consisting of the old Shire Hall, which now has the Historical Society Museum, offering displays that depict the local history of the town.
A quantity of beautiful parks and gardens are situated in Warragul, with Civic Park being the most picturesque. Located in a valley, Civic Park has a rotunda, large lake, picnic shelters, a waterfall and walking tracks. Overseeing the park are the West Gippsland Arts Centre which is a popular site for visual arts and performances, and local government offices. Warragul is also home to a few of Victoria's lushest agricultural lands, as well as being a main provider of milk for Melbourne.
Many events and festivals are concentrated around the town's dairying and agricultural industry, comprising Harvest of Gippsland and Farm World. Why not spend a few days roving through the galleries and heritage buildings, then discover Gippsland’s beautiful country and the striking Mt Baw Baw snowfields. Meander down Queen Street and wonder at the 19th century construction established in the decorative archways and facades of the local shops, banks and hotels. Take a journey back in time at the heritage-listed Warragul Station and Shire Hall, which was erected in 1893, and is now housing the Historical Society.
If you require some fresh air, travel to the country and see the beauty of the adjacent hills and fields with a drive down the Old Sale Road. Why not also select from a massive range of wineries, restaurants and bakeries in the region and relax for an evening of boutique fine cuisine and local wine. Take home enticing jams and chutneys from Clearly Delicious, or wonder at the scenic landscapes neighbouring the Wild Dog Winery.
If you are vacationing during the month of March, be sure to organise your trip using one of the numerous events at the Palate of Passions festival with an overabundance of winery events, extended lunches and worldwide flavours. Make a stopover at the numerous studios and galleries that are dotted around the local region. From live music, glass blowing, sculpture, to craft markets, there is always an adequate amount of things to stimulate your imagination.
Call in at the Lillico Glass Studio and purchase some handcrafted works by glass artist Haydn John, or stop by the Darnum Musical Village to witness antique musical instruments in a historic background. In 1883, the Warragul Guardian reported that Warragul has it’s first “ghostly visitant”.
The article stated that “It is now a month or two since it became rumoured that one (ghost) had been seen and heard inside a certain little cottage situated upon a property distant about a mile from the Warragul Post Office”. A quantity of beautiful parks and gardens are situated in Warragul, with Civic Park being the most picturesque.
